Downsizing and Letting Go When Moving

In my market in Highlands County Florida I work with sellers every day. It might be a retired couple selling their large lake home and wanting a more easy to maintain smaller home. Or because they want to travel in their RV for half the year and then return home to our nice sunny and warm winters here in Highlands County. Other times I am working with a seller that wants to move “home” which usually translates to back up north because of health reasons and wanting to be near family. More often or not, my sellers are children or personal representatives of an estate and they are here emptying a home to put on the market. In all cases, there is a lifetime of memories in these homes. Sometimes there is not enough room to move and keep all the treasured items. Other times, family members have their own household and do not have room for a lot of keepsakes. Those old dishes that you may have loved and treasured may not be something your children want. Then, you are downsizing and have no place to store items that you have loved over your lifetime. When I see estate sales, it is always sad to me because items that were loved by the owner are being sold in a garage sale. Everything always has a story. Many times I wonder what the story was.

One idea that was shared with me and I have passed on to many of my clients is take a photo of your treasures and make a scrapbook of photos. Because is it always the item or is it the memory associated with the item that we treasure? Before you decide to have your own sale and after you take photos, offer to give a special item to someone who has always admired the item. They will love this gift from you and treasure it as much as you have over the years. If you do have a sale, use the money from the sale towards your move or doing something fun for yourself. Because if you do not, someone else will be having the sale and be enjoying the proceeds! I now look at all the “things” in my home a little differently. If I don’t love it, it’s gone!

If you need a recommendation for someone handling a sale for you, give me a call. It is easier than you think. They will price and tag everything for you for a percentage of the proceeds. Estate sale people know the value of items and will in most cases get more money from a sale than you will on your own.
